Roosevelt elk cows in a meadow
Roosevelt elk cows scatter across a meadow in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park as two bulls vie for dominance of the herd. Largest of North America’s elk subspecies, their name honors conservationist President Theodore Roosevelt.

Leaf insect camouflaged by a green leaf
Eyes and antennae barely reveal the head of the leaf insect Phyllium giganteum. Early botanists believed that leaf insects actually incorporated the foliage they mimicked. As Royal Society Fellow Richard Bradley wrote in 1759, "The insect is nourished by the juices of the tree … and at the fall of the leaf, drops from the tree with the leaves growing to its body like wings, then walks about."

Fourteen stories up a 30-story tree, Humboldt State University scientist Steve Sillett (at center) and his team measure a fire cave in a massive redwood in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Wildfires have twice burned this tree but failed to kill it.

King Penguins in Moonlight
As sure as moonrise over Possession Island, king penguins gather each year for "ecstatic display." Puffing their chests, lifting their heads, and belting out calls, birds of both sexes advertise themselves. Before long, pairs form and join a crowd, and breeding season is on.

Teens rest in a state fair tent
Behind the scenes at the Iowa State Fair, kids tuck in for a rest during the four-day livestock event. Beyond the couch, cattle owners prepare a calf for the show ring. Cattle competitions have been part of the Iowa fair since its beginnings in 1854, when perhaps 7,000 people attended the exposition. These days the annual fair draws more than a million visitors and brings at least $60 million into the Des Moines economy.
